ESPC 2027-2028 COMPETITION CATEGORIES
(All will be open for submission starting June 2027)

Living mammals, birds, or fishes that are neither human nor domesticated. Images must be from natural habitats (not from zoos, aquariums, etc.) They can be exotic (e.g., from the wilds of the Serengeti) or nearby (a deer wandering down the road).


Pick a Color

One color serves as the focal point in the photo and that color expresses more intensity among other colors in the picture. Additional colors should appear subordinate to and supportive of the main color.


Best Getaway

This is to include your favorite shot(s) taken while on a vacation or a weekend getaway (taken while on a planned getaway - not businee or in everyday life).

Oct

Trees

Real, fake, alive or dead. It it's a tree, it qualifies. Seek to capture a broad aspect of the tree - not just a few leaves on a branch.


Barns

A barn must be the main subject of the photo.


Senior Adults

Capture the essence of the elderly - bring the viewer into an elderly person's life and emotions.

Nov

Flight

As long as the main subject is in flight, everything is in play.


Abstract

A photo that does not represent a depiction of a visual reality, but instead uses form, color, tone, lines, shapes or texture to achieve an artistic effect.


In the Kitchen

Anything that can be found in a kitchen. For example, people cooking or washing dishes or seated around the kitchen table enjoying a meal. Although the image may include food, it should complement the scene and not be the primary subject of the photograph.

Jan

Action

A photograph that gives a sense of motion. The subject can be a person, object, animal or moving water. When taking a photo of a moving subject, consider whether you want to freeze motion or include motion blur.


Sacred Places

Images of spiritual locations - churches, synogogues, mosques, etc. - that hold deep spiritual or cultural significance - conveying a sense of awe, tranquility, and spiritual connection.


Youth

What is youth to you? Depict youth however you see fit but remember, it must be relatable to the viewer as well.

Feb

Birds

Any photograph whose main subject is a bird (or birds). These could be domesticated pets or in the wild, in a zoo, on a farm, wherever.


Festival

Make the viewer feel like they missed out on a fun, unique experience at a fair or festival.


Humor

Show us a photos that evoke a sense of humor, which is very subjective…basically an image that makes you laugh - in a good way!

Mar

Waterscapes

The subject or main focus of the photograph should be a body of water (ocean, river, waterfall, creek, spring, pond, lake, etc.). The photo may include structures, but they would be complimentary and should not take the viewers focus away from the water.


Pet(s)

A domestic or tamed animal or animals kept for companionship or pleasure.


Musical Instrument(s)

Any device(s) used for making music must be the main subject.

Apr

Watercraft

Any vessel that travels on water must be the main subject.


3 of a kind

Three similar objects should be the main subject. The "objects" can be literally anything (people, animals, statues, trees, whatever.)


Windows/Doors

A photograph where the primary subject consists of windows and/or doors (single or multiple).
